These aren't players destined for immediate stardom or guaranteed roster spots, but rather individuals with a certain "upside" that makes them worth considering as the team rounds out its depth.
The Running Back Conundrum
One position that always warrants a second look, especially in the realm of special teams and depth, is running back. Even with the addition of Travis Homer, who brings valuable special teams experience, and a current roster of four backs, the picture isn't entirely clear. Personally, I think the team might be evaluating Kaleb Johnson's potential, perhaps even exploring his trade value if he's projected to be RB3. This is where someone like Dare Ogunbowale could enter the conversation. He boasts significant special teams chops and has proven capable as both a runner and receiver throughout his career, primarily with the Texans. While his raw numbers might not be eye-popping, his 109 career receptions suggest a versatility that could make him a serviceable RB3 or RB4. In my opinion, bringing in Ogunbowale for training camp to compete and provide an evaluation benchmark for Johnson is a smart, low-risk move.
Reunited and It Feels So Good?
The tight end room is another area where a familiar face could make a return. The Steelers showed interest in Donald Parham last offseason, only for a devastating torn Achilles to derail his season before it even began. What makes this particularly fascinating is the recent advancements in recovery from such injuries. While a torn Achilles is severe, athletes are bouncing back with remarkable speed and effectiveness. The current TE depth chart, featuring Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, and JJ Galbreath, could certainly benefit from additional competition. If Parham's athleticism hasn't been completely compromised, his familiarity with the team's system and his potential to add quality depth make him an appealing, if medically contingent, option. From my perspective, the Steelers likely have a better understanding of his current physical state than other teams, making a reunion a calculated risk.
Bolstering the Secondary
Cornerback is a position where the draft's outcome will heavily influence any free agent decisions. However, the possibility of adding Martin Emerson, who also suffered a torn Achilles, presents an interesting scenario. He recently visited with the Houston Texans, signaling that teams are indeed keeping tabs on his recovery. If the Steelers don't address the cornerback position early in the draft, Emerson could be a significant addition. With Joey Porter Jr. and the injury-prone Jamel Dean as projected starters on the outside, and Asante Samuel Jr. as the top backup, there's a clear need for reliable depth. Emerson, a proven starter who recorded four interceptions in 2023, could step in and provide immediate stability. What this really suggests is that teams are willing to bet on talent that might be available at a discount due to injury. If the draft doesn't yield the desired cornerback, Emerson could be a shrewd, cost-effective acquisition that significantly strengthens the secondary.
Ultimately, these aren't the types of signings that will dominate headlines, but they represent a pragmatic approach to roster building. In a league where depth is paramount, identifying and acquiring players with specific skill sets and potential, even if they come with injury concerns, is a hallmark of smart team management. It's about finding those overlooked assets who can contribute when called upon, and these three players, in my opinion, fit that bill.
